SmallCap Fund (WHGSX) (as of 11/17/2017)

Investment Strategy

The SmallCap Fund invests in the equity securities of 50-70 small companies with market capitalizations between $100 million and $2 billion. The strategy is designed to outperform the benchmark over a market cycle while incurring less volatility. Though small-cap companies may be more vulnerable to adverse business or economic events than larger, more established companies, the Westwood SmallCap Fund pursues high quality companies with solid balance sheets, strong cash flow and an attractive opportunity for price appreciation, identified through research and analysis of their strong business fundamentals and compelling competitive advantage. As in all of Westwood’s funds, the downside risk and upside potential of every investment are quantified. If the downside risk is too great, the team will not invest in the stock regardless of its upside potential.

Portfolio risk is managed by limiting sector weights and the position size of each holding. The Fund’s holdings and new investment opportunities are continually assessed for an optimal reward-to-risk ratio. Holdings are sold upon reaching a predetermined price target, a change to a company’s business fundamentals, a violation of the original investment thesis, or if the investment team identifies a new investment that offers a more attractive opportunity for the Fund.

The SmallCap Fund is benchmarked against the Russell 2000 Value Index.
